Embark on a 13-day journey from Lhasa to Kathmandu (or vice versa, from Kathmandu to Lhasa if you wish), exploring the heart of Tibet and its spiritual and cultural treasures. This expedition includes visits to iconic landmarks such as the Potala Palace, Everest Base Camp and Mount Kailash. You’ll also experience the sacred kora around Mount Kailash, the holy Lake Mansarovar and cross into Nepal, ending your adventure in Kathmandu. This journey offers a profound connection with Tibetan culture, spirituality, and breathtaking landscapes.

The tour can be arranged to start in Kathmandu and concluding in Lhasa. Our guide will meet you at the Nepal border, and we can provide private transfers for your comfort, either from the border to Kathmandu or from Kathmandu to the border.

Tips: Starting in Lhasa is more beneficial for acclimatization. Lhasa, at 3,650 meters, has well-developed facilities, including hotels, medical services, and other resources. In contrast, the border areas, which are mostly above 4,000 meters, have limited infrastructure and fewer amenities. For a smoother experience and better acclimatization, we highly recommend starting your journey in Lhasa if possible.

Itinerary

Upon arrival in Lhasa, our team will greet you at the airport or train station and escort you to your hotel. The first day is about acclimatizing to the high altitude. As you drive through Lhasa’s streets, you’ll get a glimpse of the grand Potala Palace standing majestically against the sky.

Optional: Depending on your flight time or your acclimatization, this evening, you can take a peaceful stroll around the tranquil Dragon King Pond Park, a hidden gem near the Potala Palace. It’s a serene place where locals come to relax, surrounded by fluttering prayer flags and birds circling overhead. The pond offers a unique vantage point to photograph the Potala Palace from a different angle, bathed in the golden hues of sunset.

Tips: When you first arrive in Lhasa, we kindly suggest skipping the shower if you can, and taking it easy. During the whole trip, always walk slowly, drink plenty of water, and keep a calm and positive mindset. Remember to respect local customs and soak in the incredible beauty of this sacred plateau. Doing so will make your journey in Tibet feel even more comfortable, special and memorable.

Your cultural exploration of Lhasa begins today with the visit to the world-famous Potala Palace, the former winter residence of the Dalai Lama. Explore its grand halls, chapels, and terraces, absorbing the history and spiritual atmosphere.

After lunch, visit Jokhang Temple, the spiritual heart of Tibet, where pilgrims from all over the region come to prostrate and offer prayers.

Later, wander through the bustling Barkhor Street, the circular street surrounding Jokhang Temple, where you can join the locals in their daily kora (circumambulation) or shop for traditional handicrafts. This morning, visit Drepung Monastery, once the largest monastery in the world, where thousands of monks gathered for Buddhist study and debate. The whitewashed buildings spread across the hillside offer magnificent views of the Lhasa Valley.

In the afternoon, visit Sera Monastery, famous for its lively monk debates held in the courtyard. The debates are a unique tradition where monks engage in animated discussions about Buddhist philosophy—an engaging spectacle for visitors to witness.

And then take a break at a cozy Tibetan tea house. Here, you can relax and savor authentic Tibetan sweet tea, known for its rich, creamy texture and subtle hints of salt and butter. The warm atmosphere, decorated with traditional Tibetan decor, invites you to unwind and soak in the local culture.

Today, your journey takes you from Lhasa to Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city. On the way, you’ll stop at Kamba La Pass (4,794m) for panoramic views of the stunning Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet’s holiest lakes. From here, the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas begin to appear on the horizon, creating a breathtaking backdrop.

After that, visit the awe-inspiring Karo La Glacier, towering close to the highway. Before arriving in Gyantse, cross the Simi La Pass, where you can stop to hang colorful prayer flags, a Tibetan custom for blessings and good fortune.

Afterward, visit Pelkhor Monastery and the unique Gyantse Kumbum Stupa, an architecture wonder in Tibet.

After leaving Shigatse, you will embark on a breathtaking drive cross several high mountain passes including Gyatso La Pass (5,240m), the first place where you can catch a glimpse of Mount Everest on clear days, rising majestically above the surrounding peaks; and Gawu La Pass (5,198m), one of the highest and most spectacular mountain passes in Tibet, from which, you’ll get a stunning panoramic view of the Himalayan range, including five of the world’s 14 peaks that rise above 8,000 meters, such as Mount Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and Shishapangma.

Then continue the new winding roads onward to Mt. Everest Base Camp (EBC) where you’ll get as close to the world’s highest point as most travelers ever will. Upon arrival, enjoy the sunset over the world’s highest peak marking one of the most unforgettable moments of the trip.

Tips:

Since Everest Base Camp is at an altitude of 5,200 meters, it’s normal to experience headaches or have trouble sleeping. There’s no need to worry! Just take it easy, relax, and soak in the stunning views. With a calm and peaceful mindset, you’ll find that the symptoms will gradually improve.
The visibility of Mount Everest varies with the weather, so it can’t be guaranteed. However, you’ll have many chances to see Everest along the way, with the majestic Himalayas accompanying you throughout the journey!
From November to March, there is often a better chance to see Mount Everest clearly. If the tent hotels at Everest Base Camp are closed during this time, we will arrange accommodation in the nearby village, ensuring that your experience with the highest mountain in the world remains unaffected.

Wake up early to experience the sunrise over Mount Everest. As the first rays of the sun illuminate the world’s highest peak, the view is nothing short of breathtaking.

After soaking in the natural beauty, pay a visit to Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world where nuns and monks reside together.

Then drive to Saga, an important stop in Nagri, passing through scenic landscapes incl. Mt. Shishapangma (8027m) and Lake Pelkutso.

Continue the scenic drive in Nagri to Darchen, the start point of Kailash Kora via Mayum La Pass (5211m) where you can get the faraway view of Gongzhutso Lake and Mt. Naimonanyi (Gurla Mandhata, 7694m). When get close to Darchen, enjoy the majestic view of Mt. Kailash and upon arrival, just take rest and prepare for the kora.

Start from Darchen: Depart from Darchen, the starting point of the kora, early in the morning. Begin your trek with a gradual ascent through the arid plains. When the eco-bus is available, we may first take it for about 5km.
Tarboch Flagpole: Pass by the Tarboch Flagpole, an important ceremonial site for Tibetan Buddhists, marked by colorful prayer flags.
Lha Chu Valley: Continue trekking along the Lha Chu Valley, with stunning views of Mount Kailash and its north face.
Dirapuk Monastery: Reach Dirapuk Monastery in the late afternoon. This monastery offers spectacular close-up views of Mount Kailash. Spend the night in the monastery’s guesthouse.
Overnight in Dirapuk: Stay overnight at the guesthouse of the Dirapuk Monastery, resting and acclimatizing to the high altitude.

Distance: approx. 22 km
Altitude: 5,630 meters / 18,471 feet (Dolma La Pass), 4,835 meters / 15,860 feet (Zuthulphuk)
Dolma La Pass: Start early to tackle the most challenging part of the kora, the ascent to Dolma La Pass. The steep climb rewards you with awe-inspiring views and a sense of accomplishment upon reaching the pass.
Gauri Kund: Descend from the pass to Gauri Kund, a sacred lake known as the “Lake of Compassion.” Pilgrims often pause here to perform rituals and prayers.
Descending to Zuthulpuk: Continue your descent through rocky terrain and lush valleys towards Zuthulpuk Monastery.
Zuthulpuk Monastery: Arrive at Zuthulpuk Monastery in the late afternoon. This monastery is built around a sacred cave associated with Milarepa, one of Tibet’s most famous yogis and poets.
Overnight in Zuthulpuk: Stay overnight in the monastery’s guesthouse, reflecting on the spiritual significance of the journey.

Distance: approx. 12 km
Altitude: 4,670 meters / 15,321 feet (Darchen)
Continue Trekking: Depart from Zuthulpuk Monastery, following the trail through serene valleys and past picturesque landscapes.
Meeting Point of Pilgrims: Pass by several sites where pilgrims often rest, offering a glimpse into the communal aspect of the kora.
Complete the Kora and celebrate the successful completion of the kora with your fellow trekkers.
Lake Manasarovar: Drive to Lake Mansarovar, rest and enjoy the scenic view of the holy lake. There is a hot spring which provides bathtubs and clean facilities (the cost is not included).

After finishing your Mt. Kailash Kora and sightseeing at Lake Manasarovar, drive back to Saga. Along the way, enjoy the changing landscapes, from rugged mountains to vast open plains, offering some of the most untouched scenery in the world.

Enjoy the scenic drive towards Gyirong through the Himalayas. Gyirong is the border town between Tibet and Nepal, a peaceful town surrounded by lush greenery and towering mountains. Travel Notes and Tips

Mount Kailash is accessible throughout the year, except during severe winter conditions. The best months for clear views and pleasant weather are May, June, September, and October. For a unique cultural experience, consider visiting during the Saga Dawa Festival in May or June, where you can participate in vibrant celebrations honoring the founder of Buddhism, Sakyamuni. Our special tour for the Saga Dawa Festival in 2024 departs on May 16th, so be sure to reserve your spot early!

To start your journey, you’ll first need a Chinese visa. Once you have your visa and a valid passport, you can apply for the Tibet Travel Permit. Since Mount Kailash is located in a remote area of the Tibet Autonomous Region, additional permits, such as the Alien’s Travel Permit and Military Permit, are necessary for your visit. Our tour packages include all required permits for Mount Kailash, ensuring a hassle-free experience. Just remember to secure your Chinese visa ahead of time!

For optimal planning, we recommend booking your Mount Kailash tour at least 30 days prior to your departure. The Tibet Travel Permit typically requires about 7 to 14 business days for processing, and additional permits may take longer due to the specific requirements for this region.

The journey from Lhasa to Mount Kailash primarily follows the national highway to Kashgar, Xinjiang. The road is generally well-paved, although there is a gravel section near Lake Manasarovar. We ensure your travel is comfortable by using well-maintained vehicles driven by experienced local Tibetan drivers. You can relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery on your thrilling adventure to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar!

The trek around Mount Kailash, known as the Kailash Kora, usually spans 3 days, approx. 54km:

Day 1: Darchen to Dirapuk Monastery (20 km)
Day 2: Dirapuk Monastery to Zuthulpuk (22 km)
Day 3: Zuthulpuk to Darchen (12 km)

The second day is the most challenging, as it includes crossing the Dromala Pass, the highest point at 5,630 meters.

The Kailash trek is a moderate-level adventure, making it suitable for those with an average fitness level. You’ll be trekking for 4 days at altitudes exceeding 4,500 meters, with the highest point being the Dromala Pass at 5,630 meters. If you prefer not to trek, you can stay in Darchen, located at the base of Mount Kailash, while your group completes the trek. During your time in Darchen, you can explore the local village and visit nearby monasteries, enjoying the unique culture and scenery without the physical demands of the trek.

If you’re worried about managing heavy luggage during your trek, we recommend considering a porter service upon your arrival in Darchen. The cost for porters at Mount Kailash is approximately 330 RMB per day, depending on specific conditions. You can also share this cost with fellow travelers who need a porter. Simply let your guide know when you arrive in Darchen if you’d like to arrange this service.

Camping is not necessary during the Kailash kora. You can stay in basic guesthouses at monasteries. Typically, these rooms accommodate 3 to 4 people and feature shared toilet facilities. Since there are no private bathrooms, consider bringing wet wipes for convenience.

While traditional restaurants aren’t found along the kora, you can enjoy meals at monastery guesthouses and tented teahouses between key stops, like Drirapuk and Zutulpuk Monasteries. Food options are basic, so we recommend bringing your own dried and packaged snacks to ensure you have satisfying meals.

Mount Kailash stands at 6,638 meters above sea level, while the highest point on your trek is the Dromala Pass at 5,630 meters. Traveling from Lhasa, the altitude increases from 3,658 meters to over 4,500 meters on the Ngari Plateau. Our carefully planned itinerary helps you acclimatize to the high altitudes comfortably. Should you experience symptoms of altitude sickness, please notify your guide for assistance.

In addition to personal hygiene items, sun protection is essential when visiting Tibet. Pack a high SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Given the Ngari region’s high altitude, temperatures can drop lower than in Lhasa, especially during treks. Bring comfortable, warm sportswear and removable outer layers. Sturdy hiking shoes are crucial, and you might find trekking poles helpful, which are available for rent.

There is no age restriction for trekking around Mount Kailash. Our oldest participant completed both the Everest Base Camp and Kailash Kora at the age of 72! However, those with cardiovascular or cerebrovascular issues are advised to reconsider. We also recommend that children under 5 avoid remote areas like Mount Kailash due to limited facilities.

Indian passport holders must apply for the Tibet Travel Permit through the Foreign Affairs Office of the TAR or the Pilgrim Center. Please reach out to us for more detailed information to assist you with this process.
