Mount Kailash

Mount Kailash in Tibet - Panoramic View

Mount Kailash, known as Kangrinboqê in Tibetan, is a striking peak located in the remote western part of Tibet. It stands at 6,638 meters (21,778 feet) and is considered one of the most sacred mountains in the world, revered by Buddhists, Hindus, Jains, and Bonpos. The mountain’s unique shape, resembling a pyramid, makes it a prominent and awe-inspiring sight.

Spiritual Significance

Mount Kailash is regarded as the earthly manifestation of Mount Meru, the spiritual center of the universe in Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain cosmology. For Buddhists, it is believed to be the abode of Demchok, a wrathful deity representing supreme bliss. Hindus regard it as the home of Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati. Jains believe it is the site where their first Tirthankara, Rishabhadeva, attained enlightenment. For Bon, it is the spiritual seat of the founder of their religion, Tonpa Shenrab.

The Kora Pilgrimage

The kora, or circumambulation, around Mount Kailash is a profound spiritual journey undertaken by thousands of pilgrims each year. The 52-kilometer (32-mile) trek is typically completed in three days and involves navigating rugged terrain, high-altitude passes, and dramatic landscapes. The highest point on the kora is the Dolma La Pass, which stands at 5,630 meters (18,471 feet). Completing the kora is believed to bring spiritual merit and purification.

Natural Beauty

The region surrounding Mount Kailash is characterized by its stark, rugged beauty. The mountain’s sheer cliffs and snow-capped peak dominate the landscape, creating a dramatic backdrop for the surrounding valleys and high-altitude deserts. Nearby, the serene waters of Lake Manasarovar and the slightly smaller Lake Rakshastal add to the area’s natural allure.
