Itinerary

Welcome to the mystical land of Tibet! Upon your arrival in Lhasa, whether by train or flight, you’ll be warmly welcomed by our staff. On the way to your hotel Lhasa, you can take in your first glimpse of the Tibetan Plateau’s high-altitude landscape, the crisp mountain air, and the unique architecture of this sacred city.

To help you acclimatize to Lhasa’s altitude (3,650m/11,975ft), we recommend you rest and avoid strenuous activities for the remainder of the day. Stay hydrated, eat light, and take it easy as you begin your unforgettable journey through Tibet.

Overnight in Lhasa

After breakfast, our small group sets out to explore Drepung Monastery, once home to thousands of monks. Walking through the ancient halls together, we’ll learn about Tibetan Buddhism from our local guide. In the afternoon, we’ll witness the lively monk debates at Sera Monastery, a fascinating spectacle that often sparks great discussions among our group members. The day concludes with a special welcome dinner at a local restaurant, where we’ll share our first impressions over authentic Tibetan cuisine.

Today our group will experience Lhasa’s most famous sites, starting with the magnificent Potala Palace. As we explore the golden-roofed chambers and sacred halls together, our guide will bring to life the stories of the Dalai Lamas. Later, we’ll join pilgrims circling Jokhang Temple and browse the colorful stalls of Barkhor Street. A highlight comes when we visit a traditional teahouse, where our group can relax with sweet Tibetan tea while watching local life unfold around us.

Bonding over breathtaking landscapes, our group travels towards Shigatse today. We’ll make memorable stops together – gasping at the turquoise waters of Yamdrok Lake from Gambala Pass, marveling at the icy cliffs of Karola Glacier, and sharing lunch with a Tibetan family in their home. At Simila Pass, we’ll hang prayer flags together, creating a special group moment against the Himalayan backdrop before continuing to Shigatse.

The excitement builds as our small group journeys toward Mount Everest. Cheers erupt when we first spot the mighty peak from Gyatsola Pass, with everyone scrambling for group photos. At Gawula Pass, we’ll stand in awe together before the Himalayan panorama. Arriving at base camp, we’ll share the magic of watching sunset paint Everest’s north face in golden hues before retiring to our shared tent guesthouse, where stories and laughter continue late into the night.

After visiting the world’s highest monastery at Rongbuk, our group travels back to Shigatse along an alternative Himalayan route. The long drive flies by as we exchange photos and stories from our Everest experience. We’ll celebrate our adventures with a farewell dinner featuring traditional Tibetan performances, toasting to new friendships forged on this incredible journey.

Our final full day together begins exploring the grand Tashilhunpo Monastery, where we might witness monks in vibrant debate. The scenic drive back to Lhasa along the Yarlung Tsangpo River gives us time to reflect on our shared experiences. In the evening, some may choose to explore Lhasa’s night markets together for last-minute souvenirs.

Rising early, our group journeys to one of Tibet’s sacred lakes. At Laken La Pass, cameras click simultaneously as Namtso’s blue expanse comes into view. We’ll walk along the lakeshore together, perhaps spotting grazing yaks against the Nyenchen Tanglha range. As the sun sets, we’ll gather for what might be our final group photos against this breathtaking backdrop.

Our last adventure takes us to the remarkable Stone Elephant Gate, where the natural rock formation seems to drink from Namtso’s waters. After lunch together during the return drive to Lhasa, we’ll have a free evening to exchange contact information and make plans to share photos with our new friends from around the world.

After breakfast, we’ll say our goodbyes as group transfers take everyone to their departure points. Many travelers leave with not just incredible memories of Tibet’s landscapes, but new friendships that often continue long after the journey ends.

Travel Notes and Tips

Yes. This tour is perfect for first-time travelers, with carefully paced altitude acclimatization starting in Lhasa before heading to higher elevations like EBC and Namtso.

Comparetively speaking, the ideal seasons to visit Everest Base Camp and Namtso are spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October), when the weather is generally clear and stable, providing good visibility of Mount Everest. While summer (July-August) is the rainy season, most rain falls at night, leaving daytime clear and pleasant.

And winter (November to March) offers low temperatures but often very clear skies, allowing for spectacular views of the stars and the Milky Way. Traveling during the winter off-season can also help you lower the tour prices. But the road to Namtso Lake might be closed due to the heavy snowfall in the region.

The road conditions for this tour are generally good. The route from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp follows the well-known Sino-Nepal Friendship Highway, which is fully paved with asphalt, ensuring a smooth journey. Even the final 90 kilometers to Everest Base Camp have recently been upgraded with smooth pavement, so there are no concerns about rough roads.
On the other hand, the road from Lhasa to Namtso Lake passes through mountainous areas, and heavy snow in winter may block some sections. However, the majority of the route is made up of well-maintained, paved roads.

The following documents are required for foreign tourists to travel to Tibet Everest Base Camp: Passport, Chinese Visa, Tibet Travel Permit (also called Tibet Entry Permit, which will be required for boarding the train / flight to Lhasa), and Alien’s Travel Permit (which is usually handled after you arrive in Tibet with your original passport).

Note: Tourists from HongKong, Macau and Taiwan needs different travel documentation. Please feel free to contact us for more info.

It is necessary to provide photos or photocopies of your valid passport and Chinese Visa to apply for the Tibet Travel Permit. Those on a working visa need to include a work certificate, while student visa holders must provide student documentation. Taiwanese tourists only need photos or photocopies of their Mainland Travel Permit. The permit processing generally takes 7-14 working days, and once approved, we’ll send it to your address in mainland China (such as your hotel address) 3-5 days before your trip. You’ll need to show this permit for boarding the flight / train to Lhasa.

The direct distance from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp is roughly 450 kilometers; however, the winding mountain roads make the actual driving distance approximately 700 kilometers. The journey typically takes around 14 hours of travel time. To ensure comfort and safety, we recommend breaking the trip into two days, allowing for better acclimatization and the chance to appreciate the scenic views along the way.

In cities like Lhasa and Shigatse, you can choose from a variety of accommodations, ranging from luxury hotels to budget guesthouses based on your preferences. At Everest Base Camp, lodging consists of basic tent guesthouses with shared facilities. And these may close during winter, requiring stays in nearby towns / villages like Tashi Dzom or Basong.

Dining options along the route include Tibetan and Sichuan restaurants, ensuring diverse choices to satisfy different tastes, including vegetarian options.

Everest Base Camp on the Tibetan side is located at approximately 5,200 meters (17,060 feet). First-time visitors to high altitudes may experience mild altitude sickness symptoms like dizziness or headaches. Our carefully crafted 8-day itinerary allows for 2-3 acclimatization days in Lhasa, at an altitude of 3,650 meters, before ascending to higher elevations, which helps mitigate severe altitude reactions. Should serious symptoms arise, such as intense headaches or difficulty breathing, use oxygen immediately, inform your guide, and seek medical help. If necessary, we can arrange for an urgent descent to lower altitudes like Shigatse or Tingri.

There may be times when Mount Everest isn’t visible due to unpredictable weather, though this is rare. To maximize your chances of seeing the mountain, plan your visit during the spring, autumn and winter months when conditions are more favorable. Our itinerary allows multiple opportunities to view Everest, and even if weather conditions obscure it, take the time to enjoy Tibet’s stunning landscapes. Please remember, the journey is about more than just Everest; it’s an adventure through remarkable natural beauty of the highest plateau in the world.

Clothing: Bring thermal underwear, warm sweaters or fleece, and a thick down jacket. Windproof pants and thermal leggings are advisable. Sturdy hiking boots, scarves, gloves, and hats are essential for layering.
Personal Items: Include skincare products (cleanser, moisturizer, lip balm, sunscreen), hygiene essentials (toothpaste, toothbrush, towel), and sunglasses for sun protection. A U-shaped pillow can add comfort during long travels, along with a thermal flask for hot water.
Common Medications: Pack band-aids, motion sickness tablets, cold remedies, gastrointestinal aids, altitude sickness medication, and any personal prescriptions.
Electronics: Bring chargers, power banks, cameras, and earphones as needed.
Cash and Cards: While mobile payments are growing, having some cash and a bank card is wise for purchases in more remote areas.

Everest Base Camp currently has 5G coverage; however, WiFi is not available. Mobile networks can be used for communication, but high altitude may lead to slower speed or unstable connections. It’s best to download important apps in advance and inform family and friends about potential delays in responding to messages during your trip.
