Itinerary

Upon arrival in Lhasa, our Tibet group tour guides will meet you at the airport or train station and transfer you to your hotel. Your first day is designed for gentle acclimatization to the high altitude plateau. As you drive into the city, the Potala Palace emerges in view, a breathtaking welcome to your Kailash tour adventure.

Tip: Skip the first-day shower if possible, walk slowly, stay hydrated, and embrace a calm mindset. Respect local customs and soak in the sacred plateau’s beauty—this will enrich your Tibet Kailash group tour experience.

Overnight in Lhasa

Today’s Tibet group tour is centered on Lhasa’s spiritual heritage. Start at Drepung Monastery, once the world’s largest monastic university—its white-walled terraces cascade down a hill, crowned by panoramic valley views. In the afternoon, head to Sera Monastery, where animated monk debates unfold in the courtyard—an intimate glimpse into Tibetan Buddhist tradition, and a highlight for every Kailash tour traveler.

Overnight in Lhasa [Breakfast + Group Welcome Dinner]

Begin your day with a visit to the majestic Potala Palace, former winter residence of the Dalai Lama. Tour its grand halls, chapels, and panoramic terraces—ideal for Tibet group tour story-building :). After lunch, experience the spiritual heartbeat of Lhasa at Jokhang Temple, where pilgrims walk clockwise in devotion. Then explore Barkhor Street, a lively circular bazaar around Jokhang—you’ll join locals practicing kora and browse traditional handicrafts. Finish with a visit to a cozy Tibetan tea house. Savor authentic salted butter tea in a soothing traditional setting—perfect for tea-time reflections during your Kailash tour.

Overnight in Lhasa [Breakfast]

Your Tibet group tour continues west toward Shigatse. En route, stop at Kamba La Pass (4,794 m) to admire turquoise Yamdrok Lake and early glimpses of the snow-capped Himalaya. Visit the dramatic Karo La Glacier by the highway, then cross Simi La Pass, where your group can hang prayer flags for blessings. When arrive in Shigatse, take rest and prepare for next day trip to Mt. Everest.

Overnight in Shigatse [Breakfast]

Cross several high-altitude passes including Gyatso La (5,240 m) and Gawu La (5,198 m). If weather’s clear, your Tibet group tour will reveal the first majestic views of Mount Everest, along with nearby peaks like Makalu, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and Shishapangma. Arrive at Everest Base Camp, where you’ll witness an unforgettable sunset over the world’s highest peak—one of the most iconic moments on your Kailash tour.

Tips: EBC sits at ~5,200 m; altitude effects like fatigue and headaches are common—stay relaxed, breathe deeply, hydrate. Clear Everest view isn’t guaranteed, but the Himalayan panorama en route is spectacular, with frequent sightings of Everest along the way.

Overnight near EBC [Breakfast]

Rise early to catch a stunning sunrise on Mount Everest. Later, visit the world’s highest monastery, Rongbuk, nestled beside sweeping Himalayan peaks. Continue through the Saga region, passing Shishapangma (8,027 m) and tranquil Lake Pelkutso, before spending the night in Saga.

Overnight in Saga

Travel Notes and Tips

Mount Kailash is accessible throughout the year, except during severe winter conditions. The best months for clear views and pleasant weather are May, June, September, and October. For a unique cultural experience, consider visiting during the Saga Dawa Festival in May or June, where you can participate in vibrant celebrations honoring the founder of Buddhism, Sakyamuni. Our special tour for the Saga Dawa Festival in 2024 departs on May 16th, so be sure to reserve your spot early!

To start your journey, you’ll first need a Chinese visa. Once you have your visa and a valid passport, you can apply for the Tibet Travel Permit. Since Mount Kailash is located in a remote area of the Tibet Autonomous Region, additional permits, such as the Alien’s Travel Permit and Military Permit, are necessary for your visit. Our tour packages include all required permits for Mount Kailash, ensuring a hassle-free experience. Just remember to secure your Chinese visa ahead of time!

For optimal planning, we recommend booking your Mount Kailash tour at least 30 days prior to your departure. The Tibet Travel Permit typically requires about 7 to 14 business days for processing, and additional permits may take longer due to the specific requirements for this region.

The journey from Lhasa to Mount Kailash primarily follows the national highway to Kashgar, Xinjiang. The road is generally well-paved, although there is a gravel section near Lake Manasarovar. We ensure your travel is comfortable by using well-maintained vehicles driven by experienced local Tibetan drivers. You can relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery on your thrilling adventure to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar!

The trek around Mount Kailash, known as the Kailash Kora, usually spans 3 days, approx. 54km:

  • Day 1: Darchen to Dirapuk Monastery (20 km)
  • Day 2: Dirapuk Monastery to Zuthulpuk (22 km)
  • Day 3: Zuthulpuk to Darchen (12 km)

The second day is the most challenging, as it includes crossing the Dromala Pass, the highest point at 5,630 meters.

The Kailash trek is a moderate-level adventure, making it suitable for those with an average fitness level. You’ll be trekking for 3 days at altitudes exceeding 4,500 meters, with the highest point being the Dromala Pass at 5,630 meters. If you prefer not to trek, you can stay in Darchen, located at the base of Mount Kailash, while your group completes the trek. During your time in Darchen, you can explore the local village and visit nearby monasteries, enjoying the unique culture and scenery without the physical demands of the trek.

If you’re worried about managing heavy luggage during your trek, we recommend considering a porter service upon your arrival in Darchen. The cost for porters at Mount Kailash is approximately 330 RMB per day, depending on specific conditions. You can also share this cost with fellow travelers who need a porter. Simply let your guide know when you arrive in Darchen if you’d like to arrange this service.

Camping is not necessary during the Kailash kora. You can stay in basic guesthouses at monasteries. Typically, these rooms accommodate 3 to 4 people and feature shared toilet facilities. Since there are no private bathrooms, consider bringing wet wipes for convenience.

While traditional restaurants aren’t found along the kora, you can enjoy meals at monastery guesthouses and tented teahouses between key stops, like Dirapuk and Zutulpuk Monasteries. Food options are basic, so we recommend bringing your own dried and packaged snacks to ensure you have satisfying meals.

Mount Kailash stands at 6,638 meters above sea level, while the highest point on your trek is the Dromala Pass at 5,630 meters. Traveling from Lhasa, the altitude increases from 3,658 meters to over 4,500 meters on the Ngari Plateau. Our carefully planned itinerary helps you acclimatize to the high altitudes comfortably. Should you experience symptoms of altitude sickness, please notify your guide for assistance.

In addition to personal hygiene items, sun protection is essential when visiting Tibet. Pack a high SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Given the Ngari region’s high altitude, temperatures can drop lower than in Lhasa, especially during treks. Bring comfortable, warm sportswear and removable outer layers. Sturdy hiking shoes are crucial, and you might find trekking poles helpful, which are available for rent.

For more information, please refer to our relevant blog.

There is no age restriction for trekking around Mount Kailash. Our oldest participant completed both the Everest Base Camp and Kailash Kora at the age of 72! However, those with cardiovascular or cerebrovascular issues are advised to reconsider. We also recommend that children under 5 avoid remote areas like Mount Kailash due to limited facilities.

Indian passport holders must apply for the Tibet Travel Permit through the Foreign Affairs Office of the TAR or the Pilgrim Center. Please reach out to us for more detailed information to assist you with this process.

Yes! The itinerary starts with 3 nights in Lhasa to help you gradually acclimatize before heading to higher altitudes. While the Mt. Kailash trek is challenging, we allow flexible participation—those who prefer not to trek can stay near Lake Manasarovar and explore at their own pace.

The 3-day trek is moderate to strenuous due to altitude (up to 5,636m at Dolma La Pass). We recommend prior hiking experience, but it is not mandatory with preparation. Our guides ensure a safe, paced journey.

We limit groups to 12 travelers for a more personal experience.

While visibility cannot be guaranteed, the panoramic journey offers multiple opportunities to see Everest. Kailash is usually visible upon arrival in Darchen and throughout the kora.
